Background
Beth Johnson Housing Association is leading a multi-million pound project to demolish sub-standard homes in Cannock, South Staffordshire and replace them with modern properties that re-build a sense of community.
The partnership also involves Cannock Chase Council, who own the bulk of the homes on the Bevan Lee estate. The Seddon Group was awarded the contract to build the new homes under a Partnering basis.
Project
An extensive consultation process has taken place with local residents to enable them to make choices in terms of housing design, the methods of construction and, where possible, their plot allocation.
Residents have also been able to select the type of home they require, where it will be located, and the type of kitchen, bathroom and interior fittings.
Work is being carried out in three phases and is due to end later in 2009, with altogether 128 new homes and a community room being built. Residents are being placed in high-standard temporary accommodation while their former homes are demolished and a new house constructed.
In addition to the conventional construction requirements, Seddon appointed a neighbourhood worker, Mary Hopwood. She acts as a bridge between local communities and key service providers, enabling residents to become directly involved in the regeneration of their community. Various training sessions have been provided for residents, including Health & Safety, Business Planning, Stress Management and First Aid.
Seddon builders saw the opportunity for a small business providing food and snacks for workmen on site. Two interested residents come forward to set up the business, and with the help of Business Enterprise, 'Catering Angels' was born. Two other local residents have been offered apprenticeships.
