Background

The Seddon Group has been working with the client Active Care/Southern Cross Health Care, completing buildings for use by people suffering from autism. Southern Cross is the largest provider of care homes and long term care beds in the United Kingdom.

The project, in the heart of the Peak District, is being undertaken in two phases using the Panaloc System, a Modern Method of Construction (MMC).

Project

In Phase 1, the Seddon Group constructed a single storey bungalow with four ensuite bedrooms, kitchen and living accommodation. This was constructed in four pods, manufactured in Panaloc's factory at Trafford Park, which were transported to the site and lifted into position by crane. After this the roof was put into place and final fixings completed.

External elevation works included the use of an insulation rendering system 80 mm thick. Look a like stone quoins were formed using coloured render on the corners of the building and under the sills to add character to the completed structure.

Hard and soft landscaping was provided, together with staff and visitors car parking. This part of the project will be developed further on completion of Phase 2 of the project. From start to completion, Phase 1 took just five months.

Phase 2 uses the same Panaloc system, this time to construct three two storey mews-type houses. The floor and walls are delivered as flat packs, and erected and fitted on site, after which the roof is installed and pods assembled.

External elevation works included the use of Bradstone slip blocks to give the appearance of stone and to further enhance the character of the building.

This phase of the works commenced January 2007 and completed in April 2007.
