Background
When the old Victorian theatre in Widnes reached the end of its lifespan, Halton Borough Council looked to create an innovative new arts centre, with Arts Council and Lottery Funding.
They chose a site in Halton, which was a natural choice, thanks to its great location, and good access and space for parking.
Project
Seddon were appointed as contractors for the project, creating an architecturally stunning, fully accessible building, named 'The Brindley'. It is made up of 420 seat theatre, a flexible studio space with cinema equipment, exhibition gallery, music rehearsal room, darkroom, bar and café which looks out over the Bridgewater Canal.
The building is positioned in good response to its immediate environment, using the canal side to provide the centre with excellent views, with flexible outdoor spaces positioned to take full advantage of these views.
Landscaping has been carefully designed around the building to create a welcoming entrance, and internal spaces are flooded with natural daylight through a curved rooflight.
Endorsement
"This multi-functional arts centre brings cultural, educational, social and economic benefits to the community, and has revitalized the area of Halton. It is a well-thought through and well-designed building and we hope that Seddon's work will continue to be a focus for the community for the next 60 years."
Peter Searing, Head of Strategic Asset Management, Halton Borough Council
