Background

Great Places is a group of housing associations who together provide nearly 11,000 high quality homes across the North West and beyond. Established in 2006, Great Places was created after Manchester Methodist Housing Group and Ashiana Housing Association decided to come together to share expertise and form a new alliance that would provide exceptional local services to customers.

Great Places is delivering an ambitious programme of regeneration and urban renewal and is committed to creating homes, not houses, and building cohesive, sustainable communities that have a positive impact on residents and the environment.

Project

Following demolition of old council stock, this Brownfield site had been left as open land before Great Places won a grant from the Housing Corporation to enable them to purchase it from the local council.

As one of the EU Framework's recommended contractors, and through its previous work with Manchester Methodist Housing Group, The Seddon Group was approached to develop the land into 36 units, 30 for rent and shared ownership through Great Places and six for outright sale.

The project will be working towards an eco-homes rating of 'Very Good' with provisions including lockable bicycle sheds to promote this green form of travel, timber windows, recycled water and high insulation, all of which Seddon has designed to decrease the carbon footprint of the properties.

Seddon will also be building the properties to a traditional design in order to fit in with the style of the local surroundings and combat misconceptions that eco-homes mean unattractive homes.

In order to engage the local community and encourage residents to enjoy their surrounding nature, Seddon is placing a community bench in the nearby protected woodland.

Endorsement

"As one of the Framework's recommended contractors, Seddon was selected for this project based on the geographical fit and their good reputation. We have worked with Seddon on a number of other projects and have always found them to be innovative and willing to investigate new ideas with us, which is fantastic for Great Places."
