Background
The Highbury Hospital project is a Phased redevelopment of an existing hospital which provides mental health and medical rehabilitation services. Work will be completed in three phases, due for completion in summer 2009. Worth £15m, the project was procured under the Government?s Private Finance Initiative, which brings with it very specific responsibilities for both the client and contractor.
The hospital, which was originally a workhouse, is made up of a range of buildings, some of which date from 1815.
Project
The first phase of the project has provided all the facilities management elements of the hospital, housing catering, laundry, portering and cleaning facilities in a state of the art building. It also has provided the first section of patient accommodation, a 22 bed ward for elderly patients, and this is being followed by an adult mental health unit.
Works will also include phased demolition, provision of temporary accommodation during the construction period and associated car parking, external works and landscaping.
Endorsement
"Each of the principal organisations went through a real learning process as we completed the first stage of the project. We will be taking these key lessons into the second and third phases. Because the project is a PFI it has set us some real challenges, but thanks to the nature of the relationship we have with Seddon, we have worked in partnership to find solutions to issues as they arose."
