Background
Inspired Developments, the regeneration arm of construction group Seddon, is transforming a site in Manchester into 10 new eco-homes. The innovative new development features a range of unprecedented environmental credentials, and has begun construction in Prestwich.
Project
The scheme has been designed to reflect and complement local architecture, and conforms to a 'Very Good' EcoHomes Standard. The homes will be built by G & J Seddon Ltd, a member of the Seddon Group, using new techniques and Modern Methods of Construction. They will also incorporate a variety of cutting edge, environmentally-friendly design features, intended to help residents save money and help the planet at the same time.
Interior walls will use Structural Insulated Panels with excellent insulating properties, meaning considerable energy and heating savings.
Domestic wind turbines will produce up to 30% of the annual electricity needs for some of the properties. "Photovoltaic" roof tiles, which use the same technology as Solar panels, will also contribute to electricity needs and hot water production.
Advanced heat recovery ventilation systems will save on energy required for heating the properties by re-circulating clean, warm, recycled air.
Low energy lighting and super-insulated hot water tanks sit alongside other innovations such as water management systems for taps, dual flush toilets and water restricted radiators that save on water and energy bills. All energy costs are being monitored by Cardiff University.
Organic paint finishes that use no polluting toxins or solvents will be used on all interior and exterior surfaces. Doors, fascias and other fittings will be made from timber that comes from proven sustainable sources.
If there is any waste material generated during construction then it will be recycled at G & J's recycling centre in Bolton where 90% of waste is recycled.
Endorsement
"The increasing threat of global warming, and the looming energy crisis is encouraging house builders to make their new homes as energy efficient and environmentally friendly as possible. We believe that in the long term, not only are there savings involved for the buyer, but of course, for the planet too, and everyone should have access to the capabilities these homes offer."
